Letter WW1

Dear Rutherford

I am not pleased to inform you that our dear friend Allan is deceased, he was exploded by a mortar, at least his death was a very quick one, please give his family my deepest condolences. On a higher note I, myself am alive and in decent condition, right now i am writing to you from a muddy corner in a trench but by the time you receive this letter I may be dead. Lately life has been very difficult and frightening although at times, exciting. Earlier today our trench was suddenly bombarded by bombs shot from enemy troops across 'no mans land'. I was having a bowl of lukewarm soup when suddenly an explosion occurred about 20 meters away from me, sending bits of mud and materials from the trench walls into my soup. A while back I had been at The Battle of Cambrai, in France. Our objective was to capture the area and damage The Germans supply line, The use of tanks had been employed this time, massive machines with a traumatic effect, I wouldn't have any idea what to do if I had been faced with a tank, luckily I was with one. However many of the soldiers including myself had been ordered to follow behind the tanks and use them as cover, I was terribly frightened, bullets were bouncing off the tank left and right and one of the soldiers with me was even killed but eventually we pushed through and it was silent. On a high note, I am doing just fine along with most of my companion troops, besides a bullet graze on my shoulder which has healed up quite nicely. Send my greetings towards  James and Martha and inform them of my arrival which hopefully will be soon.

Your jolly dear mate, Rupert

Imperialism and Industrialism-The sinking Of The Maine

*1)The Sinking of the Maine:  Using the material in the book, give specific evidence from 1898 that supported the belief  that the SPANISH were responsible for SINKING IT, vs. the 1976 Modern Interpretation.  Cite specific primary source evidence (the two pages on 308).  Give a brief description of the events that happened, and it's significance.  Cite book pages, internet sources, include title and picture.

One of the main causes of the war between The US and Spain and deciding a deciding factor in The US involvement in The Cuban War of Independence was the sinking of the USS Maine. The USS Maine (with the permission of Cuba) was sent to The Havana Bay in Cuba to protect the lives/property of Americans living there. The Maine departed for Cuba in January 1898 and got to Cuba safely and the crew members were treated with an appropriate amount of hospitality. Shortly after the Maine departed, William Hearst intercepted a letter from Spain's minister in Washington (Dupuy du Lome), This letter spoke rudely of President McKinley and was published in the paper; outraging Americans, insulting The US, embarrasing Spain and ultimately creating tension. On February 15th, 1898 The USS Maine exploded in the Havana harbor, killing 258 American sailors and injuring even more. The US media quickly snatched the story and stated that The Spanish had sabotaged the Maine, obviously the public believed this assessment and so did (The Assistant Secretary of the Navy) Teddy Roosevelt. Charles D. Sigsbee (captain of maine) was skeptical of the idea of The Spanish being the perpetrators.
The Spanish and US governments both investigated the explosion but neither could determine the actual cause. The Spanish claimed that they had nothing to do with it. However there was solid evidence supporting the theory that Spain had been responsible for example The Spanish Ambassador had already insulted McKinley, therefore showing that Spain did not approve of or trust America. The Maine was also destroyed in the Havana harbor in Cuba, which Spain was fighting to keep. And when Congress declared Spain independent, the Spanish still refused to compromise and declared war on the US, which further proves that Spain had no interest in cooperation.
Later on people considered that there was also the possibility that the USS Maine exploded as a result of the internal magazines exploding from a source from inside the ship. The USS Maine contained explosive materials and now, in the modern day many have concluded that the USS Maine did, in fact explode as a result of internal ignition.

Causes of WW1

4 MAIN causes of WWI-
Militarism: The belief that a government or people of a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it to defend or promote national interests; Great Britain and Germany were in a Naval rivalry to have a better Navy because of the belief that war was coming.

The Alliance System: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy all joined an alliance that if they got in a war at least two of them would pair up and fight as allies, Russia and France also had a similar alliance and Britain,Russia and France had an understanding that they were not enemy's. Since so many alliances had been made with so many different countries the result of all of them going to war would be really bad and it was.

Imperialism:before WW1 many countries controlled smaller countries and used them for their own benefit, France and Britain had many colonies in Africa and Asia. Now Germany and Italy decided they wanted a colonial empire too. They were jealous of the countries that had other places where they could gather raw materials and cheap labor.

Nationalism:Feeling of intense pride of ones homeland; Nationalism was a popular idea in Europe before WW1 and many people were willing to go to war with other countries to expand their own nation which they had so much pride for. This pushed the people in their own countries against other countries creating tension between the people.

What was the spark of war? The spark of WW1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne. He was assassinated on June 28th, 1914 by Gavrilo Princip who was a member of a group of six assassins, The assassination was ordered to break off Austria-Hungary's south-slav provinces so they could be combined into a greater Serbia or a Yugoslavia.

Lusitania: 1907 the RMS Lusitania, a British ocean-liner and briefly the worlds largest ship was launched. However in 1915 the Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by German u-boats causing a death toll of 1'198, This made Americans and obviously Britains very mad and had a great influence on the US's decision to go to war in 1917.

Sussex pledge: 1916, Germany had an unrestricted submarine warfare policy allowing ships to shoot torpedo's without warning and one day a French ship(Sussex) was shot and 50 lives were lost so President Wilson was irritated and told Germany that if they kept doing that, the US would break diplomatic relations with them. Germany didn't want the US to enter the war so they made the Sussex pledge; changing their naval rules a little bit.

Unrestricted Sub Warfare: 1917 Germany re-instated this policy because the war was not going well for them so they thought that if the powerful results of the policy was scaring the US, the US might not go into the war.

Zimmerman note: 1917 The German Empire sent a telegram proposing that Mexico should join the Central powers in the event that the US entered the war on the side of the entente powers. However the British intercepted and decoded it and this made everybody mad at Germany.
